James A Jannsen Scholarship 2024

Intent:

  1. Garmisch Community Club (GCC) seeks to recognize a student with outstanding communication skills.

  2. This award will be separate and in addition to any awards made under the GCC High School Senior Scholarship. 

  3. This award is named in honor of GCC founding board member James A. Jannsen (1942 - 2019). 

    • James A Jannsen enlisted in the US Army in 1959, retiring in 1983. Mr. Jannsen then went to work for the Federal Government in Germany, and retired there with his wife in 2009. James Jannsen along with his wife June, were founding members of the GCC and gave countless hours of their time and talent over the years to the Garmisch community.

 

Eligibility:

  1. The James A. Jannsen Scholarship is open to all graduating high school seniors of the class of 2024 who have also applied for the GCC High School Senior Scholarship.

  2. The GCC Board of Governors will resolve disputes concerning eligibility.

  3. NOTE: Students who graduated in 2023 and deferred college admissions are not eligible to apply

 

Selection:

GCC will grant this separately awarded scholarship based upon the following essay topic:

Discuss how spending your High School years living overseas has shaped who you are as a person and a student.

 

Packet Requirements: 

  1. Completed GCC Scholarship Application online at Jannsen Scholarship.

  2. Photocopy of applicant I.D. card (specified in “Eligibility” above).  Please copy both sides - .jpg or pdf file

  3. Essay – pdf file attached in your application form.

 

Please include your Identification Code in the upper right corner of each page. 

 

The essay should be:

  • typed, 12 point, double-spaced, with one inch margins

  • 750-1000 words

  •  include a word count at the end 

 

The essay will be evaluated on style and content, and must be grammatically correct. Points will be deducted from essays that exceed the word limits. Include any assistance you receive on your Acknowledgement Statement inside your High School Scholarship application. 

 

Topic: Discuss how spending your High School years living overseas has shaped who you are as a person and a student.

 

The essay must be received by 5:00 pm, March 28, 2024.  NO LATE ENTRIES OR ADDITIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. 

 

Disbursement:

  1. The GCC Scholarship Committee will notify each applicant of selection results in writing no later than May 3, 2024.

  2. Students must use the scholarship for basic educational expenses such as tuition, laboratory fees, dormitory fees, boarding expenses, books, equipment necessary for classes, and/or any miscellaneous fees required by the institution. Students must complete an Acceptance Form no later than June 10, 2024 or the award will be considered unclaimed.

  3. Any student who accepts an all-inclusive scholarship will forfeit the GCC scholarship.

  4. GCC Scholarships, when combined with other scholarships, must not exceed the cost of tuition, fees, and books for the academic year. Any remaining funds must be returned to the GCC. 

  5. If the student receives funds from the Post-911 G.I Bill, they must provide proof of continued financial need. If the student cannot provide proof of continued financial need, they must forfeit the GCC Scholarship.
